Stream-cutting machines.-A machine for cutting slabs of butter, ice-cream, or other soft plastic material into blocks comprises a series of fixed cutting-wires 8 through which the slab A is intermittently forced by a pusher 41, a cutting- wire 16 carried by a head 14 which is reciprocated along guides 13 in front of the cutters 8 by a hand-operated chain-wheel 23 to sever the incised portion into blocks and a removable receiving-tray 25. The wires 8 are secured between pins 9 on the bed-plate 3 and adjustable keys 10 carried by a bridge bar 11. A longitudinal slot 4 is formed in the bed-plate 3 in front of the cutters 8 to accommodate the wire 16. The tray 25, which may also serve as a gauge, is supported by a backing-plate 26 carried by studs 27 slidably mounted in guides 28 on a bracket 29 and adjustable by a hand-wheel 34 ; the bracket 29 is pivoted to lugs 30 on the bed 3, and is adjustable relatively thereto by screws passing through ears on the bracket engaging with the lugs. The pusher 41 is carried by upstanding arms 40 of a carriage 38 to which intermittent forward movement is imparted by a spring-retained treadle acting through a lever 46 ; reciprocating bar 44, and grippers 43, 43', connected by a spring 45. An adjustable stop 48, engaged by a lug 47 on the bar 44, regulates the stroke of the pusher and gauges the material cut. To permit withdrawal of the pusher, the grippers are formed with intermeshing gears 53, 54, and the lower gripper 43<1> is formed with a tail lever 52 provided with an adjustable screw 51 adapted to be engaged by an eccentric shaft 49 operable by a hand-lever 50 ; a spring catch device 55 holds the shaft 49 in its turned position during the withdrawal of the pusher. The slab A is supported upon a table 5 which is slotted to accommodate the arms 40, and is alined with the cutters by means of an adjustable transverse gauge or fence carried by slotted tongues extending from the bed-plate 3.
