Engraving; ruling machines and appliances.- Relates to a machine for preparing screens or films for use in colour photography and kinematography according to the process described in Specification 6894/13, [Class 98(ii), Photographic processes &c.], wherein both surfaces of a film are coated with colour which is then removed in fine lines, the lines on opposite sides being in juxtaposition. This is effected by cutters e, h in the form of fluted cylinders on each fluting of which a number of circumferential teeth e<2>, Fig. 4, are cut. The cutters are rotated in the opposite direction to the travel of the film and are maintained in such position that the lines cut by one are in juxtaposition to those cut by the other, by friction gearing comprising a grooved disk on one cutter engaging a tongued disk on the others. A plain portion on either side of the fluted and toothed portion of the cutter and of slightly less diameter than the addendum circle of the teeth determines the depth of the cut. A roller f mounted loose on its spindle f<1> presses the film up to the cutter e and the pressure is regulated by its spindle being eccentrically mounted in its bearing and carrying on its end f<2> an arm f<3> by which it may be partly rotated by adjusting- screws f<4>. A roller k similarly adjusted is provided for the cutter h. The friction gearing of the cutters is maintained in gear by the cutter h being free on its spindle g which is eccentrically mounted and carries an arm h<3> by which it may be partly rotated by a spring h<5> and screw h<6> or by conically-faced set-screws h<7> as the friction disks wear. The film is guided into the machine by a flanged roller d mounted in a pivoted frame d<2> which may be adjusted in opposition to a spring d<5> by a screw d <6>. A roller n<1> in a pivoted frame n maintains the film in contact with the roller d by means of a spring n<2>. Rollers l, p<1> similarly mounted to the rollers d, n<1> guide the film out of the machine. Feed-rollers c, c, m, m, one of each pair having a flange engaging a corresponding groove in the other, are provided at each end of the machine.
