[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Progressive evaporators.-Evaporators of the calandria type are divided into compartments by vertical partitions d, d<1> in the liquid space, and the liquid is circulated through these compartments in series, passing from above the upper tube-plate in one compartment to below the lower tube-plate in the next. The circulating-tubes f<2> may be arranged externally as shown, or internally, and may be so connected as to provide for the re-passage of liquid through certain of the compartments. Regulating-devices are fitted in the circulating-tubes. The size of the compartments and the number, height, and diameter of the tubes in them may vary in accordance with the concentration of the liquid passing through them. The tubeplates may be conical in form.
