Brick, pottery, and like kilns; tunnel kilns.- Comprises modifications in tunnel and other kilns of the kind described in Specifications 18,114/10, 8228/12, 23,863/12, and 8505/13, in which the goods are subjected to the action of air or gas heated by contact with the walls of combustion chambers arranged longitudinally within the kiln. In the tunnel kiln shown in Fig. 2, the air-heating portions g, with the combustion chambers b, are separated from the heating-chamber d for the goods by walls or partitions c, which divide the circulating air into separate streams, and prevent direct radiation of heat from the combustion chambers to the goods. The kiln may have air - heating chambers at one or both sides, and also, where two sets of rails are provided, in the middle. The walls may be vertical, as shown, or curved to the contour of the chambers. Similar walls may be provided in the cooling-zones of tunnel ovens constructed as described in Specifications 23,863/12 and 8505/13. The combustion chambers may be constructed, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, with external ribs p, which prevent the walls of the chamber from collapsing even when softened by the heat. The channels r formed by the ribs may be enclosed by plates t, which also serve to prevent direct radiation on to the goods. The bottom wall may also be strengthened in a similar manner or may be made sufficiently thick to resist the action of the heat. The combustion chamber mav be either triangular in cross-section, as shown, or rectangular. Strengthening-ribs may be formed on the corrugated chambers described in Specification 8228/12.
