Bronzing and the like; gripper mechanism.-A bronzing and dusting attachment for printing and lithographic machines, also applicable for use alone, comprises a casing 1 adjustably secured at 2 to the machine and fitted with a bronzing-cylinder 4 provided with grippers 10 which take the sheets from a gripper cylinder 11 arranged above the impression cylinder 12 of the machine and carry them past brushes 49 supplied with bronze, gold or like powder by rollers 48, 47 from a trough 51 which may be fed from a hopper alone and by an archimedian screw 53. The roller 47 has shallow circular or elongated recesses to deliver small quantities of the powder, and is driven intermittently by ratchet gear and a link from an adjustable crank on the bronzing-cylinder shaft, the rollers 48, 49 being driven continuously The roller 4 delivers the sheets to grippers 22 on a pair of chains 23 passing round sprocketwheels 24, 25, which convey the sheets between adjustably-mounted dusting-rollers or brushes 28, 30, all of which, except the last pair of rollers 30, revolve in the opposite direction to the movement of the sheets, the last pair revolving in the other direction and serving in conjunction with a fork 36, reciprocated by a lever 37 and cam 39, to deliver the sheets on to tapes 32. A partition 63 is arranged between the upper and lower sets of dusting-rolls and may be inclined to deliver the dust into the hopper feeding the trough 51. When applied to a lithographic machine, the brushes 28 may be dispensed with and the chains 23 moved in the opposite direction to convey the sheets between the brushes 30 and deliver them beneath the casing. The bronzing-cylinder 4 is driven from any convenient shaft of the printing- machine and carries a wheel driving the sprocket-wheel shaft 7 and a small wheel 16 driving a wheel 13 carrying cams 19, 21, arranged respectively to act on the arms of a spring-controlled bell-crank 14 fixed on the shaft 9 of the grippers 10, so as to open the grippers at the time to receive a sheet from the gripper cylinder 11 and at the time to deliver it to the grippers 22 on the chains. The grippers 22 are carried by a spring-controlled rod 26, Fig. 4, extending between the chains and fitted with a crank 33 which is actuated by a cam 35 fixed, preferably adjustably, to the casing 1 so as to open the grippers through a little more than a right-angle, thereby enabling the simultaneous movement of the fork 36 to guide the sheet on to the tapes 31 carried on driven rolls. The cam 35 is extended sufficiently to hold the gripper open until it received the next sheet from the cylinder 4. Fig. 10 shows a modified arrangement for operating the grippers of the bronzing-cylinder. The gripper shaft 9 carries a spring-controlled lever with unequal arms 65, 66, which are operated respectively by arms 68, 69 carried by the sprocket-wheel shaft 7 so as to open the grippers at the required times to receive and deliver a sheet. The brushes 28, 30 carry pulleys driven by an endless band or belt from the sprocketwheel shaft 7, an adjustable jockey pulley being provided for adjusting the tension.
