Traction engines.-A tractor particularly designed for drawing agricultural implements over soft ground is constructed with an earth-engaging screw for propulsion, longitudinal earthengaging steering-vanes, power-driven wheels vertically adjustable, and an adjustable propelling and steering wheel. The shaft 13 carrying the screw 14 is driven by the engine 24 through the longitudinal shaft 21 and belt or chain 20. In order to prevent lateral movement of the tractor due to the turning of the screw 14, and to facilitate steering, a series of radial adjusting-vanes is provided at one or both ends. These vanes 18 can be rotated in either direction from the longitudinal shaft 30 driven by the engine. The two wheels 32 are independently adjustable vertically, being mounted on arms movable about the driving-shaft 34. When it is desired to raise the screw 14 and vanes 18 out of contact with the ground, the rear wheels 32 and front wheel 49 are lowered, so as to take the weight of the tractor, the rear wheels being lowered by springs 35 bearing on the ends of the radius arms 33, as shown in Fig. 6. The front wheel is carried by a turntable which can be raised or lowered and is turned for steering by a shaft 59 acting through worm and spur gearing. Driving of the front wheel is effected from the worm shaft 13 through toothed gearing 42 and a bevel-wheel 44 engaging the upper side of a double crown wheel 45, the lower side of which is geared to the axle of the road wheel 49, as shown in Fig. 11.
