Abstract

18,473. Brown, P., and Bostock, F. J. Aug. 14. Milling-cutters, sharpening. - In a machine for grinding hobs, milling-cutters, &c., an abrasive wheel 8 is carried in a universal head 7 on a vertical slide 3 moved up and down on a standard 1. by means of a disk 17 and crank 14. The hob &c. is carried on a spindle 13 operatively connected with the slides through a rack and gearing so that the hob is rotated first in one direction then in the other as the grinder moves up and down the tooth face. The gearing for thus rotating the hob includes an indexing-device and means for adjusting the depth of cut of the grinder. The disk 17 is so situated as to provide a quick return of the grinder, and is driven by a pinion 19 on a foot-lever 20, which carries a brake block 26 at one end, to engage the disk 17 and stop it at the required point when the foot-lever is operated to take the pinion 19 out of mesh. The rotary movement of the cutter carrying spindle may be cut out when straight toothed cutters are being ground.
