Abstract
17,701. Tupper, W. Aug. 1. Window appliances.- In fire-escape lowering- apparatus, of the kind in which a casing suspended from a window carries lowering and cl brake drums side by side, the user being attached to the lowering-rope and regulating his descent by a rope attached to the brake, and the lowering rope being re - wound after the descent by a crank handle on the drum shaft, the lowering and brake drums are arranged in separate compartments so that the lowering rope cannot become entangled with the brake. Fig. 3 shows one construction in which a metal ribbon B, forming the lowering- means, is wound on a drum in one compartment of the casing A while a brake band 15 passes round a brake drum G in the other compartment. The user is attached by a body sling to the eye on the ribbon B and operates the brake by a cord attached to the eye on the brake band. The ribbon is re-wound by the folding crankhandle D. The casing, which is of horseshoe shape, rests on the window sill and is secured in position by a hook at the upper end of the chain 11 engaging the inner edge of the sill. In a modified construction, the casing has three compartments, the central one containing the brake drum, and the outer ones lowering drums on which the ribbons preferably are wound oppositely.
