Abstract

Punching; punches. - Metal sheets are fed and adjusted longitudinally in a punching, shearing, or like machine by means of rollers operated by hand or by power and controlled from any position in front of the machine. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to the punching-machine described in Specification 28,027/12, the rollers h being driven by an electric motor 12 through a train of gearing including a reversing gear. The gears 7, 8, Fig. 4, loose on the shaft 13 rotate in opposite directions, and either one can be clutched to the shaft 13 by moving a member 9 towards it. The members 9 are operated by link-work 14, 16, 15 connected to the hand-rails 19, which extend across the machine and are pivoted to the operator's platform 17. When the handrails are in their mid-position, the rollers h are stationary and, to prevent damage, this position is automatically maintained, during the operation of the punch, by a cam 34 which through the link-work 32, 31, 30, 27, 28 moves the slides 25, 26, engaging projections 21, 22 of the pivot 20, in opposite directions. When the punch a is prevented from operating by the removal of the gag 39<Î>, the automatic safety device may be put out of operation by sliding the cam 34 along the shaft 35 by means of a lever 38<Î>. The rollers h each have a fixed flange l and a flange m, Fig. 8, urged towards the other by a spring-pressed or weighted lever o, which is pivoted to an adjustable slide p. The rollers may be rotated by the hand-wheel 39, Fig. 2, or the like. In a modification, the rollers and the punch and die slides are operated by reversing motors 47, 46, Fig. 8, controlled by switch boxes 53, 54 connected to bars 55, 56 having handles 68, 58, 69 and 66, 57, 67. The handles 57, 58 are pivoted in a projection 59 of the slide c, and can move along, but not turn on, the rods 55, 56.
