Abstract
17,435. Podolsky, H. July 29. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; cars; propelling; steering; parachutes. - An aerial machine comprises a curved main plane 3 with fixed straight fore and aft extensions 4, 5, elevators 18, 19 operated by worms and wormwheels and chains 22, centrally-pivoted rudders each in two parts 59, 60 and 61, 62 coupled together by a rod 67 and operated by a lever 63, an enclosed car and front and rear propellers 49, 48 driven by an engine 58 controlled by a clutch 55 and lever 57. Curtains may be drawn down from rollers 31, 32 at the front and rear edges of the main plane 3 by cords 36, 37 passing to a winch 42, so as to act as a parachute with the main plane, when the engine fails. The winch 42 is locked by a detent and ratchet.
