Abstract

15,454. Ricardo, H. R., and Chorlton, A. E. L. July 4. Concussion - preventing devices.- A device for damping oscillations in the flow of fluids passing through pipes and particularly applicable for use on the inlet or exhaust pipes of internal-combustion or steam engines comprises a converging inlet which leads the fluid into a circular annular chamber where it rotates with a fly-wheel effect and from which it is led by a diverging outlet pipe. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the fluid entering by the inlet B is deflected into the annular chamber A by curved blades D and directed into the outlet C by similarly curved vanes K. The outlet passages may lead from the outer circumference of the annular chamber. In a modification, the inlet and outlet are arranged tangentially to the fluid conduit. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the fluid entering at B is directed into the conduit A, formed by semicircular grooves in the two parts F, J, by vanes H formed integrally with the part F and is discharged through a tangentially arranged outlet. The device may be water-cooled.
