13,255. Mazouch, W., and Blimsrieder, F. J. June 7. Parachutes.-A spring-operated parachute, which is connected by straps 12, 16 to the aviator, has the ribs 2 partly covered with fabric 7. The uncovered central space forms the opening of a balloon-like bag 8 of loose fabric, connected to the ribs 2 at the points 5 and to the sliding collar 4 on the axis 1 by cords 10. The big is opened out by the air as the parachute descends. Valves are placed in a sleeve 22, connected to the fabric 8, and open automatically if the air pressure in the bag becomes excessive. On an aeroplane, the closed parachute is placed in forks at the rear of the aviator. On a balloon, the parachute is supported by a pivoted cane casing 20; when the aviator falls from the car, the casing swings into a vertical position and the parachute then slides therefrom.
