Stockings and socks; undergarments; combinations.-A turned welt in which the reverse side shows to the front, as shown in Fig. 1, is made upon a plain web, such as a stocking, undergarment sleeve, &c., by retiring the loops knitted upon alternate needles during the initial course by means of the web-holders s, which have bevelled front edges, as shown in Fig. 2. Alternate web-holders are retired after the initial course is knitted, and then advanced so that the loops upon alternate needles get below, as shown in Fig. 5. Knitting then proceeds upon all the needles, but the loops originally on the alternate needles are not freed until the welt is finished, and when finally cast off serve to attach the welt to the web. By retiring half the web-holders in one course and the remainder in the next course, a welt is obtained which is secured at each wale to the web. If the stocking &c. is commenced at the toe, an additional piece of fabric is made after completion of the welt, to prevent unravelling of the welt. A welt may be knitted on half the needles, the other half being retired after completing the initial course until the welt is finished.
