Ladders. -Ladder locks 15 for extension ladders are pivoted to the upper section, and releasing-arms 10, adapted to engage the locks and retain them clear of the rungs of the lower section during the descent of the upper section, are pivoted to links 9 rigidly fixed to a transverse spindle 3, which is provided at one end with a link 4 carrying a pivoted arm 5 with means for securing the hauling-rope 7. The releasing-arms are weighted at 12. When a pull is exerted on the rope, the spindle is rotated and with it the links 9, to throw the arms 10 into the path of the rungs of the lower section, as shown in Fig. 3, but if the rope breaks, the arms 10 fall into a position as shown in Fig. 1 so that their ends 13 do not engage the noses of the blocks, which then engage over 'the nearest rung, and prevent the upper section from falling.
