Abstract

11,995. Smith, R. H. May 22. Direct gas and steam pressure apparatus.-Relates to generators for motive fluid consisting of a mixture of steam and combustion products as described in Specification 6394/98, [Class 8, Air and gases, Compressing &c.], and comprises among other matters means for regulating the water level in the generator, and for forcing the water into the generator. Water enters the generator from a chamber 40 containing a float 44 which operates a valve 50 controlling a pipe 51 supplying air under pressure whereby water is forced from a tank 36 to the chamber 40. The tank 36 is arranged under the chamber o so that the heat from the chamber c is utilized to heat the feedwater, and the supply of water to the tank 36 is controlled by the device shown in Figs. 8 and 10. The tank 36 is connected with a chamber 53 containing a lever 63 carrying a float 64 and a counterpoise 65. The compressed air which forces the water from the tank 36 to the chamber 40 passes through the chamber 53. The lever 63 also carries valves 58, 59 controlling the supply of compressed air to the chamber 53 and an outlet to the atmosphere respectively. The tendency of the pressure of the air on these valves is to raise the float 64, but the valve 58 is nearer to the fulcrum of the lever 63 than the valve 59. The weight 65 is so aijusted that the valve 58 will remain open, and consequently'water is driven into the boiler until the tank 36 is nearly empty. The float 64 then falls, closing the valve 58 and opening the valve 59. Water than passes by a gravity feed-device to the tank 36, but owing to the relative positions of the valves 58, 59 the float 64 will not rise till the tank 36 is nearly full, whereupon the chamber 53 and tank 36 are again cut off from the atmosphere and opened to the co npressed-air supply.
