Abstract
11,599. Wayland, F. May 18, 1912, [Convention date]. Endless-band and rotating - tool machines; stretching by tension.- In a machine for staking, stretching, glazing, and otherwise treating hides and skins, the work passes between two members, at least, one of which consists of a pair of endless stretching belts mounted in line and moving in opposite directions from their juxtaposed ends In Figs. 2 and 4, the application is shown to a machine in which pinch and tool rolls 5, 9 are moved by an oscillating frame into working contact with pinch and bed rolls 4, 8 in the usual manner. A bridge 12 spans the machine, in adjustable relation to the tool 9 by means of screws 13 in the framing, and it carries two pairs of double sprocket-wheels 15, 16 and 17, 18, the oppositely-moving chains 19, 20 of which support the stretching-belts 22. The belts are of leather or the like and aresupported by cross-bars 21 which are secured to the chains at intervals and are curved to co-operate with the tool cylinder. The bridge 12 carries tracks 40 recessed to receive lugs 41 on the cross-bars and hold the belts up to the work throughout their length. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the tool and feed rolls 9, 29 are fixed and the bedroll 8 is mounted in a rocking-frame 2. Before being treated by the tool, the work is drawn between horizontally-moving stretching-belts 42, shown in plan view in Fig. 6, and stationary stretching-jaws 30, 31. The belts consist of pairs of sprocket chains carried by bridges 32, 33 and spanned at intervals by cross-bars 44 having inclined and imbricating stretching-blades 45 similar to the blades on the jaws 30, 31. The jaw 31 and bridge 33 are mounted on a plate 39 rigidly attached to the frame 2, and the jaw 30 and bridge 32 are carried by a sliding plate 34 which may be lowered by a pedal-actuated rod 38 against the action of a spring 37 to control the stretching action of the blades. The two sprocket systems are geared together by wheels 47, 48 which are held in mesh by a link 49 independently of the position of the rocking frame 2. The working-tool may have inclined vanes with interspersed knobs for burnishing, as shown. In the form shown in Fig. 11. the work is drawn by rollers 4, 5 between two sets of stretching- belts one of which, 62, 63 moves horizontally while the other 59 moves vertically. The horizontal belts are constructed similarly to those shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the vertical set consists of chains 53 joined by transverse bars having inclined and intermeshing teeth. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also a machine having a pair of vertical coacting stretching-belts, but no horizontal belts. One belt is mounted in a swinging arm, as in Fig. 11, and the other is carried by a sliding block which may be depressed by a pedal against the action of a spring to control the pressure of the blades similarly to the block 34, Fig. 5. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
