Cutting-edges, treating. -Relates to apparatus for sharpening the cutting-edges P of a wood - mortising chain having links as shown in Fig. 1, and consists in providing such apparatus with an adjustable grinding-disk 1 and a spindle 12 over a chainwheel 11 at the end of which lies the mortising- chain to be ground. The spindle 12 is rotatable and slidable in bearings 16 and is also slidable but not rotatable in a ratchetsleeve 17 between the bearings. A spring plate co - operates with the ratchet-sleeve 17 in such fashion that, when the chain tooth being sharpened is ground down to the desired extent, one of the teeth of the ratchet-sleeve contacts with the spring plate and prevents further rotation of the spindle 24 to feed the chain tooth to the grinder. For grinding a chain tooth, the ratchet-sleeve is set so that the spring plate is adjacent to the appropriate ratchet tooth, and the spindle 12 is moved to and fro longitudinally by means of the hand-wheel 24 to traverse the chain across the grinder, and at the same time the hand-wheel serves to press the chain tooth against the grinder. A canvas band 26 dips into water in a box 22 and serves to catch and retain dust from the grindstone.
