Abstract

8964. Mason, C. T. April 16. [Addition to 8128/13.] Inductor alternators.-In an ignition dynamo having pole-pieces rotating within a fieldstructure which carries the windings and is rotatable within the magnet for timing the spark, as described in the parent Specification, two coils are employed, with a make-and-break switch in the circuit of one of them, and the elements are arranged to facilitate assemblage and dismounting. Also, a fixed field member may be employed with separate pole-pieces, movable for timing. The spindles 17, 18, Fig. 1, of the revolving pole-shoes 19, 20 are journaled in the bosses 5, 6 of magnetic end-plates 7, 8, which bear in the magnet poles and in projections 2, 3 of the base 1 of the machine. The end plates and laminµ 9, together with non- magnetic rings 12, 13, form the rotatable field system on which are placed the two coils 10, 11, and optionally the condenser 16. The spindle 18 carries a cam 22, which, as shown in Fig. 2, co-operates with an interrupter 24, 25, 26 in the circuit of one of the coils. The casing 23 of the interrupter is attached to the end plate 8 and moves with it, so that the intensity of the spark is unaltered when the field structure is moved for timing. The base 1 may be secured to or form an integral part of the engine, and the magnets and field system may be removably attached to it by clamps 29, 30, Fig. 3. To enable the windings to be removed without disturbing the other parts, their core 35, Fig. 6, may be made with a sliding fit between the poles 36, 37 of the field or it may be fixed by screws. The condenser may be wrapped around one winding, as at 36<1>, Fig. 6, or placed flat on one side of the field structure, as at 37<1>, Fig. 3, or it may be placed in the base, as at 35<1>. In Fig. 8, 'a form is shown in which the coils and field structure 9 are stationary and the timing is effected by movable pole-shoes 14, 15. These are carried by a non-magnetic cylindrical structure 42 which is attached to rotatable endplates similar to those shown at 7, 8 in Fig. 1. The position of the pole-shoes is controlled by means of a lever 43 attached to one of the endplates.
