Boots and shoes, cleaning and polishing. - A flexible band is reciprocated transversely over the front portion of the shoe and is also oscillated in a vertical plane, thus producing a combined rubbing and whipping action on the shoe. The band and its supports are carried by an arm 5 which is connected to an oscillating shaft 9 driven from the motor-shaft 16 through the medium of a bevel-gear 33 and a crank 32 actuating a sliding rack 26 geared to the pinion 28. The shaft 9 and the above-mentioned transmission gearing is mounted on an arm 4, which is oscillated about the pivot 6 by means of a crank and connecting-rod 12. The motor on the shaft 16 is in circuit with a generator 17 and an operating-switch 19. The arm 5 carries two bowed plate springs 20, 21 connected to each other at their lower ends by bars 22, Fig. 7. The spring 21 is made deeper than the spring 20, and the bars 22 are bent downwards at their rear ends so as to be in line with the ends of the spring. This arrangement causes the front of the polishing-band to curve over the toe of the boot. The polishing-band is stretched between the lower ends of the springs and is fixed in position preferably as follows. A bar, rolled to form a recess, is secured to the lower edge of each member 22, and to thickened portions which cannot pass through the space at the bottom of the recesses, formed in the band near each end, for example by sewing cords 40 into folds in the material. The bands are slid into position from one end of the recesses. In a modified construction, the ends of the cloth are laced to the bars 22:
