Abstract

8558. Smith, H. T., Bateman, J., and Mitchell, H. April 11. Beam compasses. - The bar a is circular except for a small flattened portion of the circumference, and has one of the points &c. b secured to it. The other point &c. d is secured to a sliding block e which is hollowed out to receive a cylindrical clamping-piece g having a circular aperture through which the bar a passes. The member g carries a screw h which passes through a washer j and carries a nut i by means of which the slide e is clamped to the bar. To prevent rotation of the slide, a plug k is inserted in the member g. This plug has a head having one side flat to bear against the flat part of the bar, and the other side rounded. Both of the points may be made to slide if desired.
