Rollers.-Abrasive-composition rollers for use in reducing substances by crushing, grinding, rolling, &c. have the reinforcing-material so associated with the abrasive composition that parts thereof extend to the surface and act in conjunction with the abrasive material to produce the grinding effect. The reinforcing-material preferably consists of metal wire, which may be introduced in network form with the strands more or less concentric to the surface in one or more layers, which may be spaced apart, associated with strands or members which may project in a more or less radial direction. The radial members alone may extend to the surface, and be arranged to extend from a network base, and be formed to project singly, in pairs, or in groups; pairs of wires may project from the base, and the two wires of each pair may diverge. Or the reinforcing-material may be wound in spiral or other form, associated or not with radial members. The reinforcing- material may consist of porcelain, glass, cast iron, steel, brass, carborundum, alundum, nickel, &c. Fig. 2 shows the peripheral portion of a composition roller associated with two layers A<1>, A<2> of wire network. Fig. 4 shows a roller comprising a core or base C of metal, cementitious material, or abrasive composition associated with a. peripheral layer D of abrasive composition having radial members E fixed at their inner ends into the core or base C. Radial members D<1>, Fig. 5, may extend from the shaft to the periphery of the composition, and these may extend from a network base; the inner ends of the members D<1> may be fixed to wire hoops D<2>. Interlaced helical wire network, or expanded or punched metal, or material presenting walls, which may be apertured or perforated, may be used. Fig. 12 shows a roller composed of composition C<1> having fins F of porcelain, glass, or vitreous material, &c.
