8351. Walls, J. A. April 9. Pencils.-The core 13 is constructed so as to be non - homogeneous as regards its marking properties in any cross - section. The pencil when used produces upon the writing-surface a mark which appears as a streak or ribbon of gradually changing complex striated or banded appearance, whereby any erasures or interpolation can be detected by the abrupt change in the progressive development of the striae. The core of the pencil is preferably of flattened cross-section, and the pencil itself may be oval. The core may be produced by breaking up a number of pencil cores having different marking properties into regular or irregular-shaped sections 15, which are subsequently moulded and bound together.
