Abstract

8280. Hesselman, K. J. E. April 23, 1912, [Convention date]. Actuating from reversible shaft.-A fuel-pump, for internal-combustion engines which are started and reversed by means of compressed air, is actuated by two clutching-devices, each acting for one direction of rotation of the driving-shaft, the arrangement being such that, on reversal of the engine, one of the clutches is put out of operation and the other put into operative position to drive the pump as soon as the direction of rotation of the shaft changes. In the arrangement shown, the pump 2 is operated by an eccentric 5 forming part of a sleeve 6 mounted on the shaft 7. An outer sleeve 12, which can slide longitudinally upon the sleeve 6 and contains a bevelled recess 14, is connected to the reversing-gear of the engine by a lever 13. Motion is transmitted from the shaft 7 to the sleeve 6 by two pawls 8, 9 pivoted to the sleeve 6 and engaging with notches in the shaft 7. When the outer sleeve 12 is shifted along the shaft, the pawl 8 is forced out of engagement with the shaft 7 by the action of the bevelled recess 14, and the pawl 9 comes into operative position as soon as the recess 14 releases its outer end. The sleeve 6 and eccentric 5 remain stationary under these conditions while the shaft 7 is slowing down ; but as soon as the shaft reverses, motion is transmitted to the sleeve 6 through the pawl 9.
