Abstract

7888. Calthrop, E. R., and Lynde, F. G. April 3. Tanks, more particularly for the storage of petroleum and like inflammable liquids, are built of a number of reinforced concrete polygonal cells 2 having a common floor 1 and roof 3. These cells are connected together at the top and bottom by ports 4, 5, those at the bottom being connected to pipes 13 by which the oil may be introduced or withdrawn, pumps 15 being provided for the introduction of the oil. The upper openings are connected to pipes 10 which communicate with gas holders for receiving any gas which may be given off by the oil and returning the same when the tank is emptied. Compressed air for cleaning out the receptacle may be admitted through a pipe 18. The whole tank may be covered with earth to protect it from naval and aerial attacks. The cells may be arranged in separate groups such as a, b for holding different liquids.
