Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces; negatives, producing by means other than by photography. -Relates to the production of a combined screen and base on which negatives are made by hand or mechanical means, which negatives perform a two-fold function, namely that of a negative and that of a screen, and are more especially applicable for making half-tone printing-surfaces. A sheet of celluloid or other relatively soft but tough material is formed with a series of tapering or pyramidal-shaped projections. A coating of ink is applied to the apexes of these projections and a coating of translucent material such as a solution of shellac containing red colouring-matter is applied to the whole surface. The coatings at the apexes are then removed by rubbing with a rag soaked in turpentine leaving a series of light openings. The negative can then be made by tracing and with an air brush, or by scraping away the projections and producing openings of variable diameter in accordance with the light and shade of the picture to be reproduced. Component colour negatives for colour printing are similarly made.
