Abstract
5941. Junkers, H. March 10. Drawings to Specification. Cylinders, construction of and cooling. - A cylinder adapted to withstand high temperature and pressure stresses is formed by a thin watercooled liner, reinforced by annular ribs transmitting pressure stresses to a thicker jacket or shell. The ribs may be formed on the liner or the jacket, or may be separate and may be of non-conducting material. In order to promote circulation of the cooling-water, the ribs may be perforated or undercut. The exterior face of the liner may be provided with recesses &c. to increase the cooling-surface. In the neighbourhood of apertures in the cylinder walls, the ribs may be united by ring members. The reinforcing-shell may be formed in sections united by a corrugated jacket to allow of expansion. In engines having two oppositely-moving pistons in the cylinder, the reinforcing shell may taper towards the end in accordance with the diminishing pressure, and the liner may be formed in two parts bolted or otherwise secured to'the reinforcing shell at their inner ends. The valves may be carried by the outer shell and the joint between the shell and liner made tight by caulking or bushing.
