Abstract

1750. Still, W. J. Jan. 22. Motor power plant.-A thin cylinder is strengthened by a pressure-resisting sleeve which forms the outer wall of the cooling-jacket, the invention being particularly applicable to engines in which the waste heat is used to generate steam from the cooling-jacket water for use expansively behind the piston. The cylinder 1 is formed with ribs 10, Figs. 1 and 2, encircled by the sleeve 12, and the jacket spaces between the ribs are supplied with water circulating from a boiler. The exhaust gases are supplied to the boiler and pass through tubes to a feedwater-heater. Steam is supplied to the rear of the piston from a valve chest 9 connected with the boiler. The sleeve 12 may be removably mounted on the cylinder by a flanged joint at its lower end and by a stuffing-box joint at its upper end as shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve being preferably turned taper and forced over the ribs 10; or a non-removable sleeve may be shrunk over the ribs and over a flange 25, Fig. 3, forming the bottom of the jacket. In the latter case the cylinder head carrying the valves is removable, being formed with grooves 27 fitting over the tops of the walls of the cylinder and of the sleeve, and being secured by bolts 28 taking into some of the ribs on the cylinder. In an engine of the type described in Specification 25,356/10, having oppositelymoving pistons, the central portion of the cylinder is ribbed, and a sleeve is placed over the ribs in the assembling of the parts. The end portions forming the steam expansion chambers bear against rings 39, Fig. 7, closing the water jacket, and are drawn together by bolts embedded in the lagging of the sleeve 35. To relieve the structure of strains due to excessive expansion of the sleeve 35, the rings 39 are formed with rounded outer surfaces 43, and with grooves 44 in their inner surfaces.
