Abstract

4714. Apte, K. K. Feb. 24. Carding-engines; gins; openers, cleaners, and scutchers.-A grid or sieve. which can be applied to cotton gins, openers, willows, scutchers, carding-engines, &c., comprises parallel wires A not interwoven with other wires and preferably at right-angles to the travel of the material, with means for regulating the tension of these wires as shown, in combination with means for causing a lateral vibration of the wires, such as by brushes or blades arranged to travel across and underneath the wires. In Fig. 3, the grid A is shown as applied on the underside of a cotton gin. Brushes E are provided on the underside of the grid, which is placed a little lower than the surface of the frame C, so that the reciprocating member D will clear it as it pushes the material forward to the roller B. The wires may be tensioned in any convenient manner, and it is stated that the grids may be made something like tuning-forks.
