4707. Heaton, T. Feb. 24. Explosive gases, detecting. - In a miner's electric lamp which may be employed as a gasdetector or lamp at will, the gas-detector comprises a resistance wire of platinum, nickelchrome, &c. and an oil or other vessel with a wick or other burner in proximity to the wire and adapted to be lit by the wire when it is heated in the presence of fire damp. The lamp n, oil or other vessel g, and the terminals i, i<1> between which the resistance wire is secured are carried by a cap d threaded iuto a ring c which screws on to the base portion a. The lamp and gas-detector are enclosed in a chimney c<1> secured with packings r between the cap d and the lamp top v, which includes a double gauze cone w. Either the lamp or the resistance wire may be put in circuit with the accumulator by turning the base portion a. The burner of the oil-vessel is preferably of porcelain or other non-conducting material with the resistance wire wound around it ; or the wire may take a straight or sinuous path.
