Abstract

4203. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Casein C0.]. 18. sizes,. starch.-Starch is modified bv treatment with an agent such as oxalic acid which is neutralized with ammonia &c. when the action has proceeded far enough, the product being mixed with water and a large proportion of mineral matter for use as a facing coating for paper. The starch is treated with an aqueous solution of the modifying-agent, the water being, preferably, just sufficient to bring the agent into intimate contact with the starch granules; the mass is then dried, preferably in vacuo; until it is about as dry as the original starch. The temperature used during the drying is insufficient to break up the granules, and the treatment is arrested by treatment with a suitable alkaline reagent, preferably ammonia. When the viscosity of the product has reached a predetermined value after the neutralization the product may be dried. A viscosity test for application to samples during the progress of the modifying treatment is described. A suitable composition for coating lithographers' paper is a mixture of a suitable mineral base, such as kaolin, blanc fixe, or satin white, and water with the dried modified starch described, which has been heated in water to a temperature sufficient to break up the starch granules. In a modification this coating-material is produced in practically one step without any drying of the modified starch. Formaldehyde may be added to prevent decomposition.
