Abstract
4120. Le Manquais, F. V. Feb. 18. Composite springs; vibration - dampers. - Relates to frictional vibration-dampers employed to check the vibration of vehicle suspension springs, and consists in a device comprising wedges which are forced into frictional engagement with suitable guides by a spring - pressed wedgeshaped member. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the vibrations of the suspension spring C are damped by a device comprising a rod connected to the axle-clip B engaging wedge-shaped blocks D sliding in a casing E pivoted to the frame A; the outer surfaces of these blocks are forced into frictional engagement with the walls of the casing E by a pyramidal, or conical block F actuated by a coiled spring G. The frictional resistance varies in this case directly with the compression of the spring G. In a modification, the parts are so arranged that the frictional resistance varies inversely with the compression of the spring G. In another form, the vibrations of a helical spring are damped by placing it around the casing E between suitable flanges, one fixed to the casing and the other to a member telescoping into the casing, and carrying the wedge F. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the device is arranged so as to damp the vibrations of its own spring CG. A form is shown in Fig. 9 in which the wedge frictionblocks D are arranged to surround a central guide E, and are forced into contact with this by an internally-coned collar F urged by a spring G.
