Abstract

3734. Gridley, G. O. Feb. 13. Drilling-machines.-A tool head for use in automatic turret machines is described with reference to the machine described in Specification 28,829/11, in which a turret work-table revolves and is fed axially on a central column 4, Fig. 2, which supports a drill head 10 and contains a central driving-shaft 40. The drill head may be fed and may be the turret. In the construction shown, the head 10 is splined to the column and is adjustable axially, as a whole, by nuts 29, 30. The rim 12 of the head is carried from the hub by arms 13, Fig. 4, and slides 18 adjustable round the head are clamped in position by bolts 19. The drill spindles are provided with ball thrust bearings 22 and are journaled in bushes 51, 52, Fig. 5, in sleeves 21 adjustable radially and axially in the slides 18 by washers 26, Fig. 7, and 27, Fig. 5, and nuts 24, 25. The washers 26 may vary in thickness and may be placed on either side of the slides. A spider 38 on the top of the column carries spindles 37 journaled in sleeves adjustably mounted in the arms of the spider in a manner similar to that of the sleeves 21 in the slides 18. Change-wheels 44, 45 may thus be secured in driving relation to either of the wheels 41, 42, 43 on the shaft 40 according to the speed required. Universal joints and telescopic shafts transmit the drive to the drill spindles
