Producers; carbonizing processes and apparatus.-In the gasification of fragmentary or fine fuels, air is passed downwards through the charge, and the gases evolved during volatilization are conducted away, as a, whole or in fractions, separately from the gases evolved during gasification of the de-volatilized residue. The operation may be stopped after the devolatilization of the charge, and the remaining residue recovered as coke. The gases of the volatilization period may be treated for recovering by-products and may be subdivided by being conducted away at consecutive intervals. The apparatus consists of a receptacle A, for the fuel, resting on a substructure B and closed by a cover C. Air is admitted by a pipe D and the gases withdrawn through an outlet E below the grate F. A funnel G prevents tar which separates from the gas from re-evaporating. The receptacle A has trunnions L by which it may be moved away from the substructure and tipped.
