Rotary filters.-A rotary drum for filtering metallic solutions &c. comprises a number of independent circumferentially - arranged sections which are mounted around and in connexion with a common suction conduit. As shown in Fig. 6, a filter section comprises a framework of longitudinal and transverse bars 34, 37, supporting plane and corrugated metal sheets 40, 42 and a sheet of canvas 44. Liquid filtering through the canvas passes through holes at the bottom of the corrugations into a groove 46 in the crossbar 37, and thence through a plug cock 28 into one of two hollow supporting-rings 21. The rings are in sections which communicate by spokes 20, Fig. 1, with hubs 13 on the hollow shaft 5 of the drum, connected respectively to a pipe 17 leading to a partial vacuum and to a pipe 18 leading to a device for supplying air or other gas under pressure. The material to be filtered is supplied through an adjustable feeding-trough extending along the top of the drum, shown in cross-section in Fig. 8. Discharge from the trough is regulated by a metal sheet 75, having notches in its lower edge, which hangs in the longitudinal aperture at the base of the trough and is subjected to an oscillatory movement in its own vertical plane. A squeegee roller 92, Fig. 9, having radial rubber plates 94 is provided, preferably at the upper part of the drum near the feed-trough, for the purpose of cleaning the surface of the drum. The roller is placed at an angle to the axis of the drum and is mounted so as to allow of tangential and radial adjustment relatively to the drum and to yield radially under spring-control. A spray-pipe for supplying wash-water is provided in connexion with the squeegee. The plug cocks 28 are rotated by pins supported from the framework of the apparatus and engaging with star-wheels on the ends of the cocks. The pins are adjustable and so placed that each section is under suction as it passes the feed-trough and under pressure as it passes the roller 92. The tank enclosing the lower part of the drum contains wash - water or weak solution and the pins may be arranged so that the liquid drawn through from the tank is conducted to a separate suction device by means of the pipe normally used for the pressure connexion.
