Abstract

2487. Haynes, E. Jan. 30. Alloys.-Cobalt alloys, for use as steel suhstitutes in making cutting implements, contain also two or more of the metals chromium, tungsten, molybdenum and uranium. Preferably chromium is always present, and to the extent of from 5 to 60 per cent, and the aggregate proportions of the other metal or metals of the chromium group vary from 60 to 5 per cent. An alloy containing 70 per cent of cobalt, 25 per cent of chromium, and 5 per cent of tungsten is suitable for wood-cutting tools, cutlery, etc.; an alloy containing 60 to 35 per cent of cobalt, 25 to 50 per cent of tungsten, and 15 per cent of chromium may be used for lathe tools.
