Abstract
2123. Wilson, J. Jan. 27. Pneumatically - o p e - rated fastenings.-In an apparatus for locking and unlocking railway carriages, of the kind described in Specification 23,332/12, a retainer a on the doorjamb is arranged in front of the door latch a<2>, which is of the kind described in Specification 4031/11, and is adapted to be rotated to permit unfastening of the door except when locked in position by means of a pneumaticallyoperated piston or diaphragm. For this purpose, the retainer a, maintained in locking position by a spring a<4>, has a projection a<6>, Fig. 6, which is normally free to move within a gap of the piston-rod b<2>, but is held in locking engagement with the lower end b<4> of the pistonrod when the piston b<1> rises in the cylinder b. In the form of apparatus shown, the piston is raised by the formation of a vacuum in the cylinder b, which is connected with the trainpipe by a pipe b<5>; but in a modification in which the cylinder is inverted, compressed air may be employed. The spring a<4> may instead be of the uncoiling type, or may be replaced by a weight. As shown in Fig. 1, the latch a<2> may be combined with a spring-pressed latch-lock e, as described in Specification 12,815/12; and the whole apparatus is adapted for an emergency unlocking and for accelerated unlocking, as described in Specification 28,346/12.
