Abstract

1776. Rideal, E. K., and Evans, U. R. Jan. 22. Chemical testing, cells for. - Oxidizing and reducing agents in liquids are detected and estimated by passing the liquids through a galvanic cell C, and measuring by a volt-meter V the depolarizing-effect produced. Substances such as chlorine, ozone, and potassium permanganate, which may have been added to water or effluents, for instance for sterilizing, may thus be estimated, and the valuation of bleach liquors &c. effected. The cell C shown consists of a copper tube in which an axial platinum rod P is secured by vulcanite stoppers, but other metals may be employed. Inlet and outlet branches from the copper tube are insulated by vulcanite sleeves from other tubes R containing stop-cocks. According to the Provisional Specification, the ends of the copper tube may have holes and be secured by vulcanite sleeves in glass tubes traversed by the liquid.
