Abstract

1187. Westinghouse, G. March 19, 1912, [Convention date]. Regulating.-Steam is admitted through a main admission valve 54, Fig. 1, to a segmental chamber 8, whence it passes into the interior of a channel-shaped slide valve 12, Figs. 1 and 2. open to the chamber 8. The valve 12 is provided with ports 20, 21, 22 which co-operate with ports 23 ... 28 leading to chambers 29 ... 34, each of which contains a number of nozzles 35. The ports 20, 21, 22 are so positioned that, as the valve 12 slides from right to left, the ports 23 ... 28 are opened in succession. To render the valve 12 flexible, the intermediate partitions 36, 37, Fig. 2, therein are made with transverse holes 38, 39, and saw-cuts 40 are made. The valve 12 is held up to the ports by spring-pressed cylindrical blocks 44, Figs. 2 and 4. Each'block is formed with a pressure chamber 46 in communication with a passage 53 leading to one of the nozzle chambers 29, 31, 33. When, therefore, one of the ports 20, 21, 22 registers with the port of a nozzle chamber, additional pressure is applied to hold the valve up to its seat. The valve 12 is fitted with a rack engaging a worm 69 on the piston-rod 67 of a servomotor 63. On assembling, the valve is adjusted by rotating the rod 67. Subsequent rotation is prevented by the engagement of a key 72 with a saw-cut in the worm.
