Abstract

1067. Riley, R. S. Jan. 14. Mechanical stoking.-Fuel is fed by reciprocating pushers 18 to troughs or channels formed between vertical walls built up of inclined bars 31 on which are mounted air-supplying grate blocks 30. These bars are given an adjustable reciprocating motion by means of sliding bars 34 secured to them and carrying bolts 36, between the heads 37 of which and adjustable nuts 38 work wrist-pins 25 secured to the plungers 18. The lower ends of the bars are each connected to a shoe 39 sliding on a plate 40. Plates 33 and ledges 42 secured to the bars support plates 43 at the rear end of the bottom plates 14 of the fuel-channels. The grate-blocks 30, which form the upper portion of the walls of the fuel-channels, overlap as shown in Figs. 4 and 5'(Fig. 4 being a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1), and are formed so as to provide air-supply openings at the sides, by means of projections 68, 68<a>, to which openings air is supplied by passages 46. Ribs 48 are formed on their upper faces. Below the plates 33 are air-supplying members 50 attached to the reciprocating bars 31 and extending the whole width of each trough so as to form a grate surface. They are provided with ribs 51. Air is supplied to the space beneath the stoker by a fan 56, driven from the shaft 21 of the stoker, the air and fuel supplies being thus always proportionate. The air passes to the fuel through the openings in the air-supplying members 30, 50, the supply to the latter being regulated by a damper 55. An ash-support 58 is provided, formed of plates connected to chains 59. They rest upon longitudinallymovable bars 60, whereby the area of the ashsupport may be varied. Pushers 39<b> on the shoes 39 of the reciprocating bars 31 force the ashes over the support, the rate of discharge being varied by adjusting the area of the support and of the discharge opening by means of the bars 60, by varying the travel of the pushers 39<b> by the adjustable nuts 38, or by moving the ash-support vertically and substituting a pusher 39<b> of corresponding height.
