Abstract

420. Golland, C. E. Jan. 7. Variable-speed gearing. - In a two-speed treadle driving-gear for bicycles &c., a drum h with two sets of grooves h<1>, h<2> is mounted on a vertical shaft i and oscillated alternately backwards and forwards by projections a<2> on a pair of vertically reciprocating pedals or treadles a, the oscillating movement of the vertical drum shaft being converted into rotary motion for driving the rear wheel of the machine. The treadles are mounted on guides b and connected by chain gearing f, f<1>, so that, as one treadle is depressed, the other is raised. As shown, the wheel is driven by bevel gearing lo, k<1>, k<2>, k<4>, k<5> and a shaft k<3>, the wheels k, k<1> being loosely mounted upon the drum shaft but driven from it alternately by oppositely-acting ratchet mechanism. To change the gear, the projections are shifted from one set of grooves to the other, and for this purpose the cylindrical portion of the drum may be connected to the shaft i by a spring q, Fig. 4, and by a cranked locking-bolt r which passes through guides h<3> and engages a slot in an upper flanged disk n and one or other of two holes or recesses o<1> in a lower disk o. Upon raising the bolt, the spring turns the drum until the bolt is immediately over the other hole o<1>, so that the drum and its shaft may be locked together in the new relative position; to restore the parts in order to obtain the original gear. the bolt is raised and the drum h turned by hand until the bolt is over the first hole o<1>, when depression of the bolt re-locks the drum to its shaft. According to the Provisional Specification, (1) the wheel k carries ratchet teeth and the wheel k<1> pawls, (2) the channels or grooves consist of half sections of tubing partly enclosing a space, (3) the slip of the drum is effected by springs acting horizontally against axle pins and controlled by levers on the head of the drum, (4) to absorb shock, the thrust of the pawls is taken through triangular levers by pneumatic tubes boxed in round the top surfaces of the wheels carrying pawls.
