Abstract
331. Gn³chtel, G. Jan. 6. Welding.-In electrically welding aluminium, brass, &c., metallic layers, which are removed from the weld after the weld is completed, or when rendered useless by burning, are interposed between the parts being welded and the electrodes to prevent the access of air or oxygen to, and the consequent burning of the parts at, the welding point. The layers, which may be of nickel, copper, silver, or other metal or alloy, may be in the form of buttons, plates, or strips 3, and may be positioned loosely between the work and the electrodes as shown or detachably connected to the electrodes by slides or catches &c. or adapted to be moved by hand or mechanical means. Several pairs of electrodes may be arranged side by side and operated in succession. According to the Provisional Specification, the intermediate layer may also be of natural origin or an artificial matter, such as wood, amber, sulphur, asbestos wool, &c., and gum, caoutchouc, sealing-wax, glass, &c., or may be produced by galvanic or electric process such as by plating. It may also be placed on one or both sides of the weld or may form a permanent part of the weld. In another form, the layer may be interposed between the parts being welded. It is also stated to prevent clogging of the electrodes.
