Abstract
91. Helm, M. Jan. 1. Winding-machines; thread-guides.-Coils, for instance electro-magnetic or resistance coils, comprise windings laid simultaneously, one or more windings, for example of wire w, Fig. 1, being laid in closely adjacent helical coils, and the other windings, for example of insulating- material such as yarn y, being laid in diagonal or open coils on the " universal " or V-wind system and intermingling with and weaving in and out among the close coils. The coil is preferably wound on a tube on a spindle b, Figs. 3 and 4, suitably driven and connected to a cam-shaft c in well-known manner, the shaft c carrying cams C, C<1> for reciprocating the yarnguide G and wire-guide H respectively, the cam C being fast on the shaft and the cam C' being mounted on a sleeve c<2> thereon. A ratchet-wheel F secured to the cam C' and mounted on the sleeve is driven by a pawl R pivoted in a rocker-arm N straddling the wheel and connected by a link r with a lever s carrying a roll s<1> bearing on a cam U on the winding- spindle, which thus drives the cam C' at a slow speed. The movement of the lever s, and consequently the speed of the cam C', is varied by turning a disk V eccentrically mounted on a stud v journaled in a bracket T and bearing against the lever S. The roll s<1> is maintained in contact with the cam U by a spring q which also presses a shoe q<1> against the stud v to provide resistance to the turning of the disk. The rocker-arm N is controlled by a spring plate P carried by a member o pivoted in a bracket 0 and carrying a roll p bearing against the ratchet-wheel to prevent accidental movement thereof. The guides G, H are carried on rods K, L attached to blocks k, l carrying studs k<1>, l<1> engaging the grooves in the cams C, C<1> respectively, and are maintained constantly in contact with the coil by counterweighted frames D, E pivoted on the cam-shaft and upon which they are supported; springs d<1>, e<1> arranged between the guides and frames D, E allow of slight movement of the guides, which are arranged on opposite sides of the winding- spindle as shown. The cam C may be arranged to give a slightly longer traverse than that given by the cam C', so that layers of insulating- material are wound to extend beyond the layers of wire at each end of the coil.
