Pressure - regulating valves; actuating. - Vacuum brakes for railway vehicles are provided with an additional train-pipe connected to the ordinary train-pipe through, a reducing- valve arranged adjacent the driver's valve to maintain a difference in vacuum between the two pipes, and at other points on the vehicles through electrically-operated valves for accelerating the release of the brakes. Fig. 8 shows a form of the reducing-valve, comprising a valve 40 controlled by a spring 41 and a diaphragm 42, the upper side of which is exposed to atmospheric pressure. The valve is connected at the left-hand side to the ordinary train-pipe, and at the right-hand side to the additional train-pipe through the driver's valve. Fig. 10 shows a form of the electrically-operated valve, comprising a valve 51 closed by a spring 52 and opened by electro-magnets 53, controlled by a switch operated by the driver; or it may be closed by magnets and opened by a spring or air pressure. The vacuum reservoirs of the brake cylinders may be connected to the additional train-pipe by pipes containing reducing- valves 57, Fig. 11, closed by a spring 58.
