Abstract

27,793. Stow, P. E., and Sharp, H. M. Dec. 3. Printing-apparatus for colouring kinematograph films; printing-surfaces; printing processes.-A method of colouring kinematograph films and the like consists in printing on the film from a second film on which photographic images have been produced and treated with a dye or colour. Each exposure of the film to be coloured is projected on to a ground glass or other screen, and all but the part to be coloured is blocked out by painting, covering with non- actinic paper, or other manner. This image is then illuminated by a beam from a white parabolic mirror, and photographed to the same scale as the original positive film on to a second film in a camera. The film is developed and treated with a bichromate solution which renders the parts of the film containing the silver image insoluble, after which the transparent parts are dissolved away with hot water. The film may also be produced by photographing or printing through an opaque stencil of the same size as the positive film. The film thus formed is passed through a suitable dye and pressed in correct register into contact with the kinematograph film to be coloured. In the machine shown the film e to be coloured and the printing-film f, pass over rollers b, c and opposed intermediate platens d, which are mounted on yokes y pivoted on the shafts g of the rollers c mounted in bearings in brackets h<1>. The yokes y are connected at the top by a toggle k carrying a roller k<1>, an adjustable spring in tension, and a spring l in compression. The rollers b, c are connected by gearing m and are driven intermittently by a geneva-stop mechanism from a hand-operated train of gearing. The platens d are pivoted on studs d' and are connected by adjustable links d<1> to radius arms d<2> pivoted on studs w, so that as the yokes y are separated the platens d turn upwards. The toggle k is intermittently extended by a lever s which is oscillated by a suitable cam.
