Abstract

24,980. Sargent, H. N. Oct. 31. [Addition to 6154/12.] Computing speed and position of moving bodies.-The apparatus described in the parent Specification for computing speed, time, and distance in problems involving the movements of trains, motor-vehicles, columns of troops, &c., is provided with graduated indicating- arms h, Fig. 10, segmental time-distance scales 15, 16, and, if required, with pointers or arms r, s, t, Fig. 11, movable relatively to the rotatable transparent covering-disk. The apparatus is assembled in a casing as shown in Fig. 9, comprising two hinged half-cases x, y, each of which has two complete sets of apparatus, one viewed from the outside, and the other displayed when the casing is opened. Each of these sets comprises different rate scales c, d adapted for use, respectively, in problems relating to moving columns, motors, trains, &c. There are four fixed ' time' disks b, a, and corresponding rotatable ' rate ' disks d, 17, 18, c, indicating - arms h, and, on the right-hand set as shown in Fig. 9, three adjustable pointers r, s, t; the rate disks are set by milled heads or collars 2, and the indicating-arms by milled heads 7. The apparatus is used for the solution of problems such as the following: (1) to determine the hours of starting of the component parts of a composite column of troops etc.; (2) the positions of the component parts of the column at any stage of the march; (3) the hours of starting of two or more separate columns which are to effect junction and form a single column; (4) the time at which the head and the tail of any column will reach a particular position, and the road be clear for mechanical transport supply columns &c.
