Description
s. W.=RALPH. ROUTE TIME TABLE.
(No Model.)
No. 425,084. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.
ment, the hour-hand of the clock being formed hand points, for example, to the numeral I UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL w. RALPH, or MECCA, OHIO.
ROUTE TIME-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,084, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed September 17, 1338- Serial No. 285,951. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. RALPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mecca, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clock Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an indicating attachment for an ordinary clock, adapted to denote the time of arrival and departure of railroad-trains, vessels, and stagecoaches; and it consists in the construction herein described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevationof a clock with the improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the attachment; and Fig. 3 is a plan showing a modified form of the attachintegral with the disk.
A indicates a clock-dial suitably marked for twelve hours, and C and D denote the hour and minute hands, respectively, and B is a disk adapted to be placed in front of the dial A. It is provided with a central opening E of a size to embrace or receive the sleeve S of the hour-hand fitting the clockarbor F. This disk may be united to the hour-hand, as indicated at g, or in some cases it may be closely fitted to the sleeve S of the hour-hand, so as to move with it, or the hand may be integral with the disk, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The disk B is marked with the same numerals as the clock-dial, arranged in reverse order, or so that when the hour-hand is secured to the disk so as to point to XII thereon and is moved to point to XII on the clockdial the numeral 1 of the disk will be in line with XI of the dial. It now the connected hour-hand and disk move forward so that the on the clock-face, the corresponding numeral on the disk will be brought immediately adjacent to XII on the clock-dial, and in similar manner when the hour hand denotes any other time-as, for example, five oclock-the numeral V of the disk will be immediately adjacent to XII on the clock-face.
Upon the face of disk B circles of any convenient or desired number may be placed.
In the present instance four are represented as indicated by letters H I J K. Each circle, may be used to represent a road or route, and in practice the nature of the conveyance used on such route is indicated on the circle by pictures or other marks,- preferably made with crayon or erasable color, so as to admit of easy alteration. In the drawings a stage-coach L, train M, and boat N are shown. A station is indicated at O. The time of the arrival of a train, for example, will be denoted when the movement of the hour-hand of the clock has carried around the disk 13 so that the representation of the train is immediately under the station. Thus if a train is due at two p. m. the sign for the train is placed under the numeral II on the attached disk, a depot being indicated on the clock-face at numeral XII thereon, all as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be evident from the foregoing that when the clock indicates the hour of two p. m. the representation of the train and the adjacent numeral II of the disk will be under the depot, thus indicating the time it is due at the depot; and so the arrival of the steamer at four oclock will be indicated when the picture or sign of the steamer is brought to the picture of the depot on the clock-face. The location of the sign for the depot on the clock-face at XII is arbitrary, as it could be placed at any other numeral with the same effect, provided the signs were correspondingly placed on the revolving disk.
To denote a new time, the hour-hand is moved so as to indicate it on the clock-dial and the appropriate picture or mark is made on the disk adjacent to or under the station, and the clock then set to the true time. The abbreviations a. m. and p. 1n. are appropriately applied, as indicated at P and q.
The improvement requires no change in an ordinary clock, except that the hour-hand shall be connected with a disk such as indicated.
IIaving thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patentis .1. In combination with a clock-dial, and provided with muneralsand with markerl an secured to a hand or pointer thereof, a disk nular spaces to receive pictures or otherslgns, provided with numerals arrai'lged in reverse substantially as described.
order as respects the numerals of the clock- SAMUEL \V. RALPH. 5 face, substantially as described. \Vitnossos:
2. In combination with a oloclmlia], and DAVID D. DEA,
secured to a hand or pointer thereof, a disk 0. E. LAKE.
