Abstract

23,857. CoppÚe, E. Oct. 18. Freezing the ground. - In sinking shafts through a bed of shifting sand, the bed is congealed from its base upwards. Below the bed, a cross gallery is bored from a previously-sunk shaft to the locality of the proposed shaft, and from this gallery an annular gallery C is formed around the site of the proposed shaft. A series of tubes D are arranged and concreted in along the length of the gallery C, which serve as guides for the boring-tools and also receive the congealing - tubes. The tubes D are provided at their base with lateral branches E for clearing away debris, each branch having two cocks F, F<1> constituting a lock chamber between them.
