Abstract

23,390. Wale, A. E. Oct. 14. Belts.-In rubber or like driving belts or bands of the kind having helices of wire all arranged longitudinally and embedded in the material, both right and left hand helices preferably of spring steel wire are employed so disposed that the twisting tendency of either form under strain is neutralized by the presence of the other. The helices may be separate and alternately or otherwise disposed, or interlaced to form layers or strips which may be horizontally or otherwise disposed in the belt. In the form shown in Fig. 2, all the helices in one layer c are righthand and those in the next layer d left-hand helices. The layers may be otherwise arranged. Right and left hand helices or layers of such helices may be netted together as shown in Fig. 4. In forming the belts, the plastic rubber may be moulded around the helices, or the helices may be repeatedly dipped into rubber in a suitable condition, the belt being then moulded and vulcanized. Alternatively, rubber may be pressed in to the helices or drawn therein in a vacuum chamber, or other processes may be employed.
