Picking-motions.-In a drop-box loom in which the shuttles are picked positively by a vertical picking-stick 5 connected to an horizontal arm 3 on a vertical picking-shaft 2, the picking-motion is, at each side of the loom, put into and out of action, as required, by swells fitted to the shuttle boxes at the opposite side of the loom. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a rod d<2>, turned by the swell-finger at the other side of the loom, turns a bell-crank lever g by means of a rod f, and thus moves a rod h, which turns a lever k arranged to control a pivoted driving-catch c. A spring m is interposed between the lever g and the end of the rod h. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which the rod d', instead of passing across the loom, is connected by a rod f to a rod r, which passes across the bottom of the loom and actuates the catch c through the medium of a spring m and levers r<1>, s<1>.
