Disk and like milis; pestles and mortars.- The rotary pans or mortars of mills for grinding ores, colours, chemicals, &c. are discharged over the side by means of a scoop or shovel, so mounted that it may be passed into the mortar in order to take up material therefrom and then lifted clear of the mortar and swung laterally so as to empty the material taken up. The discharging-means is especially applicable to a mill of the type described in Specification 4479/02, having a rotary pestle or muller mounted eccentrically within a rotary pan or mortar, the diameter of the muller being at least half that of the mortar. The scoop or shovel k, attached to an arm l, is carried in a universal bearing m on a pedestal n at one side of the mortar a. Means may be provided for raising the muller o high enough for the hand, or a suitable implement to be passed between the faces of the muller and the mortar. As shown, a screwed shaft s, passing through a nut t on the standard r and provided with a hand-wheel u, has a neck portion at its lower end fitting between ears on the muller stem p, which passes into a bearing q on the standard r.
